Spinal Anatomy

From Our Blog

Hi, I’m Dr. Jamie Adams with Solid Ground Chiropractic, and today we will discuss a little bit of spinal anatomy. We have the vertebrae that run down our backs.

So here are some facts about the vertebrae. Did you know there are the 33 individual, interlocking bones that form the spinal column?

The next thing we need to know is about our spinal cord. The spinal cord is how our body communicates with everything. Its primary function is the transmission of nerve signals from the motor cortex to the body, and from the afferent fibers of the sensory neurons to the sensory cortex. It is also a center for coordinating many reflexes and contains reflex arcs that can independently control reflexes.

Also, the vertebral artery is very, very important. Each vessel courses superiorly along each side of the neck, merging within the skull to form the single, midline basilar artery.

Also, the bones that you sit on the makeup part of the pelvic girdle. You have the iliac crest, the most prominent portion of the ilium, the largest of three bones that comprise the hip bone or bony pelvis.  You have the sacrum here at the bottom, the sitting bones, lots of essential ligaments to help keep the spine functioning well, help support the body, and support the spine.

When we get all that messed up, what happens is our bodies don’t function well, and we can have lots of health challenges and lots of health effects. So keeping all these things in alignment and functioning is what we do with chiropractic care. We make the proper adjustments so you don’t have interference with the nerves along that spine, and your body can communicate with your organs and extremities. If you are experiencing any issues with these areas in your body, contact us to schedule a consultation to learn more about how chiropractic care can help you live a better life.
